Domain Level Shares (DFS)

figure_01

With DFS (Distributed File System) on Server 2016, you can created domain level shares that is replicated across multiple servers.   This accomplishes two very important things.   First, there is a backup copy of the same data on two physical servers automatically, and second, it will speed up the network access since the client will contact to the first available share when accessing information.

In order to take advantage of DFS, you have to install this role on every server you wish to run the service.   You do this through server manager and add the role DFS and DFS Replication.

After the service is installed, you want to pick one of the servers to act as the DFS Namespace Server, in our case, I selected TPAW-01.   The one thing that I truly don’t understand is what happens if TPAW-01 is down, how is the Namespace Server replicated.   I will research this for a future update.

The next step is to create shares on one of more servers.   You will want to setup those shares to be exactly the same on both servers as far as share and folder permissions.

You are going to have to pick one of the share to be the master for the first time of replication.   Then you go into the DFS utility and create the Namespace, and add the shares within the name service.    The wizard will walk you through this and it is extremely simple to setup.

When you add the shares, it can be on multiple servers, providing that the shares are setup exactly the same way.
