Installing the Volume Activation Management Tool

Microsoft has changed the licensing from KMS licenses to MAK licenses for those using the Software Assurance Program.   In order to manage these volume licenses, you need to use the Volume Activation Management Tool (VAMT) which is like crawling down a rabbit hole to get installed.

1.  To install the VAMT software, you have to install the Windows ADT Kit.   You can get this software at:  https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/hardware/commercialize/adk-install

We installed the Windows 10 version, but it also works with windows 7.

2.   The next thing you will need to do, if find the software after it is installed.   We found the software under a group called Windows Kits on the server.

3. To operator the software, you are going to need SQL Server Express.   This one needs to be downloaded and installed as well.   You can find that software at: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/sql-server/sql-server-editions-express

We will do another post on how to add licenses and send them out over the network in another posts, but for now, here is an overview on how the process works with the VAMT.   We no longer need a separate server for KMS.
