Setting the default lock screen via GPO

One of the new features of Windows 10 is the picture that is displayed when the computer is awaiting for someone to logon.   This is called the “lock” screen.  Through group police we can set the defaults for this image, and then lock it down so that they cannot be changed and messed with by the end users.   We have elected to put the picture of the outside of the building that the computer resides in as the default “lock” image.

Collect your photos and place them on the network

To set this up, you get the photos that you want to use, in our case we placed them in the installs/DesktopBackgrounds/ folder on the TPAW-01 server.   This is a read only location that we use to push out software, etc… but is a network share that is available to all computers on the network.

Next, we setup the group policy:

Computer / Policies / Administrative Templates / Control Panel / Personalization

We setup two polices here.

1. Force a specific default lock screen and logon image – and set this to the network share UNC path to the appropriate image.

2. Prevent changing lock screen and logon image – set this to enabled

Setup up different policy for all buildings

Since we have a separate OU for each building, we were able to create a separate policy for each building and then linked the appropriate policy to the correct OU.
