Static Electricity Defined

Static Electricity; the computers equivalent to bad cholesterol.

Computers operate on electricity, everyone knows that, but static electricity can stop a computer cold in its tracks. State electric discharge can even happen without the technician even knowing it. If you are going to work on the inside of a computer, it is imperative that you take the precautions to avoid static electricity from discharging onto the computer circuitry.

Definition

We all know of static electricity as the build-up of an electrical charge inside of a body.

It has been around longer than computers: like, forever. The first time anybody noticed, though, was around 600 B.C., when the Greeks found that rubbing a piece of amber with a piece of fur gives the amber the ability to attract feathers and bits of other materials. This was thought to be unique to amber, for which the Greek word was "elektron," so this property became known as "electricity."
