Can you visualize, step-by-step, in your head the procedure to complete a task? Do you know how a computer should react to certain software programs? Can you predict the out-come of upgrading the server operating system for a 120 workstation network?
As a computer technician you will have to have these skills. Being able to visualize what the outcome, will based on what has changed, is the process of thinking through problems logically.
Even if you would use pen and paper to work out all of the things affected about changes you are about to make before you make them, is far better than just tackling something head on. You wouldn’t go into your bedroom and start painting the walls if you haven’t covered or moved the furniture first would you? Then why would you take on a project that affects computer equipment that doesn’t belong to you without thinking it out first.
This task will also help you in planning for a service call. For example, your client is having problems connecting to their network, but you don’t know all of the details. You don’t even have access to talk to the client until you get on-site. So, by thinking the problem through logically, you can plan for your service call better and in turn it would take less time to correct the problem.
Over time, and through experience, you will learn the technology skills related to this trait, but to visualize something in your mind first is important when it comes to computer troubleshooting.
