Trait 8: Conducts themselves in an ethical manner.

The definition of being ethical is as follows:

Being in accordance with the accepted principles of right and wrong that govern the conduct of a profession. (www.dictionary.com)

As of 2005, there are no standard guidelines or organizations that cover or regulate the ethics for computer technicians, it relies on the responsibility of the company the technician is employed by, however having standards that you follow for yourself is always a great idea.

A quick list of ethics should include:

  1. Do not perform anything illegal. i.e. don’t make illegal copies of the client’s software.
  2. Do not perform anything immoral. i.e. don’t try to date the receptionist in the client’s office.
  3. Offer a confidentiality agreement to your client’s. You are probably going to have access to data that is sensitive to your client, and theirs. You don’t want to be held responsible for any security risks.
  4. Adhere to any software and hardware guidelines given by the manufacture for products. You don’t want to void the warranty for your client.
  5. Adhere to any guidelines or procedures that are given by a client or the company that you work for. You may not agree with them, but you should respect them anyways.
  6. Use common sense. If you think it is wrong to do something, you are probably right.
