In most cases, a computer technician works alone. Even on a major project each person on the team will work on a separate task; therefore it is important that a technician is accountable, responsible, and self-motivated for nothing else, but to keep their job.
Accountability vs. Responsibility
In most cases, these to words mean the same thing. However in the context of this text and for these traits, they are actually two separate things.
If you are charged with fixing a problem as a technician, you are accountable for your actions. You must see the task to the end since it was assigned to you. Some technicians will just throw their hands up and say they have no clue if trouble arises, but a great technician will always be accountable for that task.
Being responsible in this case means the ability to act without guidance or a supervising authority. Your boss needs to trust that you can be a professional representative for their company out there with their most prized possession, their client. If you cannot show up for work on time, or show up at a job when scheduled, you just might as well find another profession, because no matter how much technical expertise you have, you will not last in your field very long.
Self Motivation
A great technician does not need to be told what to do. They constantly look for something to do. Do to the fact that in this industry there is always something that can be fixed, improved upon, reviewed, or adjusted, a technician should never have any free time while at work.
Your workplace should not be looked at as a social event with your fellow employees, it is a job and you are expected to be self-motivated.
