Falls Learning Academy

Program Overview

The Newton Falls Exempted Village Schools along with Jefferson County Educational Service Center (JCESC) coordinates an internet based educational option for studnts in grades 7-12 in Newton Falls Schools. The Falls Virtual Learning Academy (VLA) provides students with a worthwhile alternative to the traditional classroom. All instruction and student assignments are completed online using a research-based curriculum aligned with Ohio's curricular models.

Student Enrollment

Enrollment into the Falls Learning Academy is not an independent decision of the student and/or parent. All interested students must contact the principal or counselor to discuss registering for courses. The student must be enrolled in the school district prior to the first full week of October 2005. A student application and a student authorization form with the appropriate signatures must be completed prior to enrollment. Falls Learning Academy (FLA).

Computer Access

The Falls Learning Academy will provide each student with access to a computer with internet capability in our labs. Students are required to attend a daily three hour session at the FLA. Learning occurs via the internet and the world wide web. The FLA coursework may also be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year from a student's home computer.

Student Workload

Students may register for one to five credits. A one credit course consists of 144 clock hours. A one-half credit course consists of 72 clock hours. Students will log on and complete their work in a self-paced, self-directed enviornment. Students must log on a minimum of 4 hours per week in each course. All student responses must be originaland stated in the student's own words. Teachers will monitor the student's work. If no work has been completed in a two week period, a lack of student participation will be reported to the FLA coordinator. Parents/guardians will be contacted if a lack of student participation has been reported.

Dropping/Adding Courses

Students have four weeks from the date of enrollment to drop or add a course. Students dropping a course after the four-week enrollment period will recieve a failing grade for that course. Courses may be dropped or added by completing the appropriate paperwork at the Falls Learning Academy.

Student-Teacher Interaction

The majority of student-teacher interaction, such as answering questions and grading student work, occurs online. All student progress is monitored via an electronic gradebook. Students recieve rapid feedback to their questions via email.Students must meet with the teacher for face-to-face administration of all assessments. This meeting may take place at the Falls Learning Academy. Students enrolled in one credit courses must complete mid-term and final assessments. A final assessment is required for students enrolled in one-half or partial credit courses.

Monitoring of Student Progress

As assignments are completed, they are electronically submitted to the teacher's email. Teachers grade work via the electronic gradebook. Each teacher creates, administers, and grades student assessments. The administration of the mid-term and final assessments takes place at the Falls Learning Academy. The student and the school district recieve a Certificate of Completion containing the course grade. The Newton Falls School district maintains all school records.

A+ = 120 - 97
A = 96.99 - 93
A- = 92.99 - 90
B+ = 89.99 - 87
B = 86.99 - 83
B- = 82.99 - 80
C+ = 79.99 - 77
C = 76.99 - 73
C- = 72.99 - 70
D+ = 69.99 - 67
D = 66.99 - 63
D- = 62.99 - 60
F = 59.99 - 0

Ohio Proficiency Test/Ohio Graduation Test Administration

Students enrolled in the Falls Learning Academy (FLA) are required to take the Ohio Proficiency Tests. Students must make arrangements to take the appropriate Ohio Proficiency Test(s) during the scheduled testing dates and times at their school district of residence.

FLA Faculty

All teachers are appropriately certified/licensed in the content areas. Teachers are available for grades 7-12 in the areas of language arts, reading, mathematics, science, social studies, health, english, spanish, french, art, and special education. Teachers are paid on a per student per course basis. Each teacher is required to complete a Certificate of Completion for each student containing the final course grade.

School District Policy

Participation in the Falls Learning Academy (FLA) is an educational option approved by each school district. The policy outlining a school district's participation, including calculation of grades into a student's GPA, is addressed in the Board of Education's current Educational Option Policy.

Parent Information

The Newton Falls Exempted Village Schools Virtual Learning Academy (FLA) is an internet-based educational option for students in grades 7-12.

Interested students must contact the principal or counselor to discuss registration. Students may register for one to five courses.

A full year credit course consists of 144 clock hours. A semester credit course consists of 72 clock hours.

Students have four weeks from the date of enrollment to add or drop a course. After that date, the school district will determine the next course of action.

Students will meet with their teachers to take the required midterm and final assessments at the FLA or another agreed upon public location.

All student work is electronically submitted to the teacher. The student and the school district of residence receive a Certificate of Completion containing the course grade.

Students enrolled in the FLA must take the required Ohio Proficiency Tests.

The Newton Falls School District maintains all student records.
