The Newton Falls Community Backpack Program began on “Make a Difference Day” in 2010. It was designed to supplement food over the weekend with kid-friendly, nonperishable foods such as peanut butter, pudding, protein bars, soup, macaroni and cheese, canned vegetables or fruit, cheese crackers, etc. About fifteen individual items are given in the (plastic) bags each week. We also include a donated, gently-used book when available, which kids may keep, share, or return. The Kiwanis Club of Newton Falls has helped with this project and their treasurer co-ordinates area school groups, community members, and church volunteers to pack.
Folks in town contribute funding to this project at Associated School Employees Credit Union. They also donate food at boxes at the credit union, Healthy Treasures, and the Newton Falls United Methodist Church. The children, selected confidentially by the school staff, are to take the bags home and share the contents with family members. We ask parents/guardians to check the contents, particularly if the child has allergies. On occasion, recently expired–but sealed– donations are given out. They meet acceptable standards according to Second Harvest food guidelines, a copy of which has been given to the Elementary/Middle School Office.
If you do NOT want to participate in this program, OR if you know of someone that WOULD benefit from this program, please let the school staff know. The program runs through mid-May.

Individuals under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Sign-In is required.
